Fire wracked him, acid burned through his veins, poured itself over his mind, and liquified every muscle in his system. His heart beat so fast he wanted to scream, but had no voice left to do so. He wanted to beg and plead for death, to walk happily into the darkness beyond, but he was not allowed such a courtesy.
It was his fault, really. Heâd taken on the burden from the boy in the bed next to him, from Nat. It wasnât fair for the kid to be tortured in the same way. He was too young, too frail to withstand it. James saw it in the way the kid looked at him, in the silent plea screaming at him from his ice-blue eyes. The kid looked at him now, watched from behind a cage. James wanted to find solace in the fact that the kid was safe (mostly) but only found enough energy to hate him for putting all the torture on James.
âNow, now, Mr. Kendall,â Dr. Love finally purred. James squirmed away from the manâs touch, feeling sullied by just being in his presence. He could not move far enough away, whimpering instead when yet another needle was shoved under the skin at his elbow, filling him with a liquid that banished the fire and turned him to Jello instead. His eyes rolled up into his skull and the whimpers came out as choking little gasps.
âLeave him alone!â Nat rasped. His voice reached Jamesâs ears as if through a long tunnel.
âPatience, my glorious slice of perfection. Your turn will come.â
Over my dead body, James thought. Or, rather, he thought he thought it. It was âsaidâ but his physical lips did not move. And, rather than look at Dr. Love from a gurney, he looked at the manâs back while âfloatingâ behind the cursed villain. It took the briefest moment to adjust to a reality he already knew - he spoke while disembodied.
The horrid doctor turned at the sound of Jamesâs spectral voice and had enough grace to look surprised by Jamesâs sudden appearance behind him. That was the only allotment James gave. He shoved his hand right through Kasmir Amadourâs chest, took firm hold of his heart, and squeezed. The elder man gasped and clutched, tried to fight back by âpushingâ James away telekinetically, but it failed. James saw the surprise on the manâs face even as his heart swelled and slowed. There was a sick satisfaction in manipulating the freak in the same way he manipulated others - like a rag doll to be played with and just as easily discarded.
âKasimir!â
Jamesâs attention diverted from Dr. Love to the woman that screamed his name. The Collector walked in with her daughter beside her, both of them assessing the situation before acting. James was not prepared for them to show up. Dr. Love he could handle. The Collector, however, was an entirely different story. He wasnât even in the same place as he was when he first started this hot mess.
